ClutterCheap started from a simple observation: the national marketplaces got big by getting anonymous. You ship a box to a stranger you'll never meet, across a distance that costs fuel and time and packaging — for an object that a neighbor three streets over would have walked to pick up in ten minutes. Something got lost in that scale. The human part. The local part. The part where you actually know who you're handing something to.

So we built something smaller on purpose. Every listing on ClutterCheap lives within a 3-kilometer radius of Washington, DC. No shipping. No waiting for a stranger's schedule across the country. Just a neighbor, a fair price, and a short walk. That's not a limitation — it's the entire point. Local exchange is faster, cheaper, and better for the planet than anything that has to travel.

That's also why the marketplace itself works differently than most. Not everything on ClutterCheap has a fixed price — some listings let the buyer decide what to offer, because the seller cares more about the item finding a good home than extracting maximum value from it. And a meaningful share of listings are donations: completely free, no negotiation, no catch. A gift card, a textbook, a piece of furniture someone genuinely just wants gone and used. We built the platform to support all three modes — sell, name-your-price, and donate — because decluttering isn't always a transaction. Sometimes it's just passing something along.

But we noticed something else while building this: decluttering a home is rarely just a logistics problem. It's a decision problem. People don't get stuck because they can't find a box to put things in — they get stuck because letting go is genuinely harder than it looks, for reasons that have almost nothing to do with the object itself. That's why we built Thoughts — short, honest reflections on why we hold on, and what actually helps us let go. And it's why we write Articles that go deeper into the practical side: what to do with the books, the moving boxes, the things you're not sure about yet.
